CLASSIC HARLEY DAVIDSON BIG TWINS

It's not that the words are perfect now either, but the more people I talked to for this book, the better I began to understand maybe why it's so tough to explain. It's hard not to focus on that strong V-twin presence, that distinctive Harley idle, and the vibration that reminds you that you are on one serious piece of machinery. But you can't judge a Harley-Davidson just on that, and you certainly can't explain it in just those terms, at least not if you're trying to capture something about the spirit of a Harley-Davidson. Beyond what you can readily see, hear and feel is something else that makes a Harley a Harley, and that is two abstract notions called heritage and tradition, overused words that shouldn't be confused with either slick marketing or dusty history lessons. No, heritage and tradition have to do with people with ideas, people who took something and made it better. In this case, it's a Harley-Davidson, a special machine that was built to be ridden, and ridden hard. 8½” X 9”

HARLEY 45'S WORKHORSE & WARHORSE

Harley-Davidson havc been making motorcycles in i\lilwaukee, Wisconsin since 1905. Some of their recent advertising rightfully points out that the company has survived a number of wars, a depression, foreign competition and even a Marlon Brando movie. It is against this background that they manufactured and sold the 750cc sidevalve as both a two- and threewheeler for more than forty years. The economic and political fortunes of America are reflected far more in the mid-sized 45 sidevalve than in the bigger and more glamorous models. The Knucklehead, Panhead and Shovelhead might have been the bikes that grabbed the headlines, but the smaller capacity sidevalve was always in production, powering working bikes and trikes, carrying soldiers, policemen and garage mechanics. The one area where the 45 did grab the headlines was racing; it was the Harley 45 that provided the competition for the main rival, Indian's racers. Out of these race bikes eventually came the Sportster, a motorcycle that is still in production. 8” X 9”

HARLEY DAVIDSON

Harley-Davidson is not just a make of motorcycle - the images, people and events linked with it have turned it into a legend. To achieve this distinction among those who ride and are enthusiasts for a particular make of motorcycle is not uncommon, but what sets Harley-Davidson apart is that people who have never sat astride a motorcycle in their lives also acknowledge the legendary status that the marque has long enjoyed. Why should this be so? What is it about this particular motorcycle - the oldest make still in production - that has turned it into an American institution? Trying to explain it in a few words is, of course, pointless. As a T-shirt inscription seen at Daytona Beach proclaimed Harley-Davidson - if I had to explain, you wouldn't understand.Nevertheless, this book does set out'to explain, and succeeds in doing just that. Starting with its humble beginnings in the early years of the century, it traces, by means of an authoritative and entertaining text accompanied by a wealth of illustrations in both color and black and white, the remarkable story of the company's trials and tribulations, successes and failures, both on the track and off. The remarkable world records and racing triumphs, the achievement of cult status through such films as Easy Rider, the surmounting of the marque's "bad boy" image, and much more is here, including technical specifications of all the models manufactured. Whether you ride a Harley or not - even if you don't ride a motorcycle at all - you will find here a fascinating glimpse of American industrial history and a remarkable insight into a legendary name. 9.5” X 12”
